About Jason Groon

Jason Groon started as the 9-12 Director of Bands for the Harrisburg School district in the fall of 2008. Prior to joining the faculty at Harrisburg, Mr. Groon was the 5-12 Director of Bands for the Arlington School District in Arlington SD from 2003 to 2008. Mr. Groon earned his Bachelors of Music Education from South Dakota State University, where he performed in the Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Pep Band, and served as Drum Major with the “Pride of the Dakotas” marching band — including a trip to the 2003 Rose Bowl Parade. In 2011, Mr. Groon earned his Master of Music Education degree from Boston University. In addition to his duties with the Harrisburg School District, Mr. Groon also maintains an active adjudication schedule and has guest conducted for local band festivals. He also serves on the South Dakota Region II Music Board. Mr. Groon is also a member of the South Dakota National Guard, serving as a clarinetist and bassist with the 147th Army Band. Mr. Groon has received several military awards including; the Army Commendation Medal, the South Dakota Achievement Medal, and the South Dakota Distinguished Service Ribbon, as well as being named 5th Army Soldier of the Year in 2003. Mr. Groon’s professional affiliations include: NAfME: The National Association for Music Education, South Dakota Bandmasters, South Dakota Music Educators Association, & the National Education Association. In 2011 Mr. Groon was presented with the “Young Director Award” from the South Dakota Bandmasters Association, and in 2015, Mr. Groon was named in the School Band and Orchestra “50 Directors Who Make A Difference Report.” Mr. Groon currently resides in Harrisburg with his wife Lisa and their sons Cade and Parker.
