The South Dakota Chapter of Phi Beta Mu meets twice a year. Once during the annual South Dakota Bandmasters Convention and again during the South Dakota All State Band. They sponsor two prestigious awards that are presented during the annual South Dakota All State Band Concert.

This chapter is responsible for awarding the South Dakota Outstanding Bandmaster Award. This award has been presented since 1969.
